After being deeply moved by Shems Friedlander’s Rumi: The Hidden Treasure and the beautiful poetry book Sunshine, which he co-authored with his son Nuri, I wanted to learn more about Shems’s personal life experience and spiritual journey.
This book was the perfect answer.
With a calm demeanor, a gentle voice, and an elegant style, the esteemed author shares the details of his life’s journey, offering deep wisdom through stories and parables.
Personally, as I turned the pages of this book, he cleared the clouds from my vision, revealing the clarity of the sky. He seamlessly transports the reader between reality, truth, and imagination—taking us from the realm of the visible to the realm of the inner self—until reaching the ultimate conclusion: that salvation lies in drawing near to God Almighty.

When You Hear Hoofbeats, Think of a Zebra is a profound, meditative read. It acts as a gentle guide for anyone looking to look past the surface of daily life and reconnect with a deeper, spiritual reality. Highly recommended for seekers of truth, lovers of Sufi wisdom, and anyone looking for clarity in a chaotic world.
