The Colourful Ribbons

The Colourful Ribbons

The Colourful Ribbons

By: Azza El Wakeel

I miss the colourful ribbons

Of my tresses

The ones of my kite

Of my key’s chain

The simple things

That brought great joy

I miss my childhood’s books

My colouring books

My piano notes

All my toys

I miss the pure white

Of the snow

That I used to see

Covering the mountains

The pure white

Of the clouds

Of the full moon

I’m no more naïve

Since I matured

My eyes are seeing

All the whites stained

In my youth

I used to think

I’ll grow up to live

Like a butterfly

Free to wander

Fly and circle

From one flower

To another

Like a nightingale

Sing my songs

Without fear

But the world

Disappointed me

It’s full of rains

Lots of tears

Limited are the choices

Wings tied with chains

Frightened nightingales

Ustazah, your metaphor of “wings tied with chains” is a quiet thunderclap—such a graceful yet devastating image to capture the ache of growing up. It gives your entire poem a haunting weight, contrasting the fluttering hopes of youth with the heavy restraint of reality. Beautifully mournful, and sharply true. 🕊️

Ustaz, heartfelt thanks for reading my new poem, and for adding your valuable comment.
This is life for most people, all we are able to do is to try our best within the limits of possibilities and available circumstances, be happy with what we have and content with what we succeed to achieve!.

This piece is incredibly moving and beautifully written. Your words capture the ache of growing up and the longing for lost innocence so vividly. The contrast between childhood dreams and adult realities is heartfelt. Though life may stain the whites we once knew, your poetic voice still soars like a nightingale—singing truth with strength and grace. 🕊️❤️🌹👏
