Devils In Disguise

Devils In Disguise

Devils In Disguise

By: Azza El Wakeel

I confess I was wrong

But I was still young

So innocent and unwise

When I believed that

My so called best friends

Were my guardian angels

Surrounding me, sheltering me

Protecting me with their wings

Didn’t listen to your advice

When you laughed at me

Warned me and told me

They were my worst enemies

You saw them following us

With their envious eyes

While my eyes were blind

You mocked at me saying

I’m either too kind

Or out of my mind

I regret I chose

To believe them

And doubted you

Took their side

And walked on you

I regret ’cause

Right after you left

Their masks fell out of joy

I understood too late

I was nothing but

Their playing toy

I saw the hatred

Inside them through

Their malicious eyes

The truth about

My guardian angels

Was revealed to me

They were nothing but

Ugly clever devils in disguise

Your verses capture the pain and betrayal of misplaced trust. It takes immense courage to reflect so honestly on past mistakes. As Naguib Mahfouz once said, “You can tell whether a man is clever by his answers. You can tell whether a man is wise by his questions.” Your poem questions the very nature of friendship and trust, showing a depth of wisdom gained through experience.

Thank you so much for your comment.
It’s easy to manipulate an inexperienced young woman’s mind when it concerns men because of men’s bad reputation, men in general are considered hunters, unfaithful, enjoy having multiple relations at the same time, being naive with this previous bad image about men in mind you’ll not doubt your so called best friends when they tell you lies but you’ll defend them saying: But why would they lie to me? That must be true!. As long as evil and envy exist I know I’ll be surprised and disappointed from people’s behavior and change of attitude as long as I live, even the closest ones ’cause circumstances changes and so does people.

Of course I do not know any of the circumstances of which you speak. But my heart goes out for all whom experience unfortunate behavior at the hands of men. It is my general belief that we men have much to answer for when it comes to the treatment of women and children. I realize that my apology does not compensate you for any suffering you may have experienced, but I just want you to know that there are people who empathize with all that which you have suffered.

If I were to suggest one tool that might help to relieve some of the suffering you have experienced, then writing about your feelings and pain would be my top suggestion.

But you have already discovered the healing power of the written word. Your beautifully crafted words may have the power to both heal and instruct.

Thanks again for adding another valuable comment, I’ve seen many good examples of men through the years and I’ve also seen many bad examples of women through the years, the suffering isn’t only caused by men nor only related to them!. I consider writing my hobby but as you suggested I find it also a heeling tool, once I write down what’s bothering me or the thought agitating me and turning in my head I feel relieved, calm and forget my sadness or anger. Sometimes I feel happy with what I’ve written that I tell myself if I hadn’t lived that experience how would I be able to write this text!.
